Our Story
Training writers one line at a time
So much has changed since we opened our virtual college doors in 2005.
Back then in South Africa, there were just two of us (Nichola Meyer and Lisa Lazarus), one freelance journalism course and a handful of local students.
Today, we have a global college, three country-specific colleges, UK, South Africa and New Zealand, 22 international tutors, 35 writing courses, and thousands of successful graduates.

Students as different
as life itself
Over the years, we’ve helped students from all over the world achieve their writing goals – whatever those goals were.
Some wanted to get published in books, magazines, newspapers or online. Others wanted to upskill as a specialist writer or editor. And some simply wanted to improve their writing for their own enjoyment.
Our students come from as many different backgrounds as they do geographic locations – from published or professional writers wanting to improve or widen their writing skills to first-timers who’ve always had a longing to write but didn’t know how or where to start.
We help writers who are:
- looking for the skills to be professional
- wanting to upskill in a particular field of writing
- struggling to create daily writing routines
- procrastinating for a multitude of reasons
- paralysed by self-doubt
- stuck in a corner and don’t know how to get out
Completing the course was a fascinating and valuable experience; quite possibly life-changing. It was exactly what I was looking for but didn't really expect to find. It went way beyond what I expected.
Choosing to do this course with The Writers College was without a doubt the right decision. It has been an eye-opening, life-changing experience for me.
It was great to have the opportunity to learn on my own terms but still get the quality content and tutoring of a University.
It is one of the best courses I have ever studied; the assessments are fun as you can put your own angle and style into each one.
The Writers College is amazing (and I am in no way exaggerating). Thank you to a great team - smooth sailing from the administration process to the course itself.
I can honestly say my writing improved by leaps and bounds. Don't hesitate; just do it. A must for every serious beginner.
Life-changing and worth every hour of work it inspired me to complete.
This course outstripped my expectations. I would not look anywhere else to do an online course but here. Being a repeat subscriber of the College's courses speaks for itself.
My experience at The Writers College changed my life. It has been a great creative outlet and has given me the courage to write a novel. Thank you.
Tutors sharing their passion for the written word
As writers ourselves, we understand the sensitivities around sharing our work with others. That’s why we’ve always worked with kindness, respect, empathy and dedication – an ethos that shows in our students’ testimonials.
We believe in one-on-one mentoring. Our courses challenge our writers to think for themselves, discover their voice, find their style and create their own content.
Our tutors – all highly accomplished in their field – know how to bring out the best in their students.
They understand the difficulty of the creative process and help students overcome the doubts that almost all writers feel.
With your tutor’s support, expert feedback and the occasional nudge, you too could be walking away with the manuscript you’ve always dreamed of writing.
